Nestled in the heart of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, the Sharjah Art Museum is a haven for art enthusiasts and curious visitors alike. During my recent visit, I was captivated by the museum’s unique blend of permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, and immersive programs that celebrate the rich tapestry of Arab art and beyond.

A Cultural Gem in the Heart of Sharjah

The museum’s location is as enchanting as its exhibits. Situated in the Arts Area of Al-Shuwaihean, opposite the Emirates Fine Arts Society, it is surrounded by heritage buildings that transport you back in time. The winding alleyways leading to the museum are lined with traditional souks and antique shops, offering a delightful prelude to the artistic treasures that await inside.

A World of Art Across Three Floors

The Sharjah Art Museum spans three floors, each dedicated to showcasing an impressive collection of over 500 artworks. From paintings and sculptures to mixed-media installations, the museum features a diverse range of expressive techniques that spark the imagination. The permanent Arab art collection is a highlight, offering a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage and artistic evolution.

Throughout the year, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions and art events, ensuring there’s always something new to discover. During my visit, I was thrilled to explore the Sharjah Biennial 16: ‘to carry’, which runs from 6 February to 15 June 2025. This edition features over 650 works by nearly 200 participants, curated by a talented team including Alia Swastika, Amal Khalaf, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Natasha Ginwala, and Zeynep Öz. The Biennial invites visitors to engage with diverse artistic perspectives and powerful resonances from across the globe.

More Than Just Art: Programs and Workshops

What sets the Sharjah Art Museum apart is its commitment to fostering creativity and learning. The museum offers a variety of programs and workshops that allow visitors to actively participate in the artistic process. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, there’s something for everyone.

The Art Library is another gem, housing over 4,000 titles in Arabic, English, and other languages, along with visual and audio materials. It’s a treasure trove for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of art and culture.

An Exciting Opening Programme

The Biennial’s opening programme was a feast for the senses. I joined a tour of historic exhibition spaces, where I marveled at the blend of traditional and contemporary art. The programme also included performances, artwork activations, and film screenings, creating a dynamic and immersive experience.

One of the most unique aspects of the Biennial is its exploration of unconventional spaces, such as a buried village, geology park, and futuristic learning hub. These sites added a layer of depth and intrigue to the overall experience, making it more than just a visual journey.
